Reading Fun

Cat in the Hat Tree Topper for the Dr. Suess 1st Grade Tree
One of my favorite weeks at my children’s school is Read to me Week. They do all kinds of fun activities the whole week and have special guests come in and read to the children. In my oldest son’s class, they even had a special guest read to them over Skype from a different country. How cool is that? The kids get appearances from Mother Goose, news anchors and other fun characters and people throughout the whole week. The kids get to wear crazy socks one day, and mix-match outfits another, and the last day they all dress up like book characters. All the kids seem to really enjoy the week and it focuses on making reading fun. I love how the week uses all realms of learning from visuals to interactive storytelling. It is truly such a fun week with an academic focus!

Crazy Mismatched Beautiful Reading Day!

This year my children chose characters Waldo and The Cat in The Hat and little brother got in on the action as Woody! I can’t wait until next year’s Read to me Week.
What a Bunch of  Characters!!!

Book Inspired Costumes

“Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.”
Dr. Seuss, Happy Birthday to You!

In honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday the boys school is celebrating with READ ME WEEK. On Friday they are ending the celebration of reading with book character day. The boys are going to be dressing up as a  famous book characters. In honor of this creative and fun day I browsed the Internet for a few of my favorite characters brought to life by costume fun. Here are some of my adorable finds from the world wide web. I think the costumes below can easily be tailored to fit  adults or child  so that everyone may take part in a charatcer day at their school!  HAPPY READ ME WEEK!

Carmen Sandiego Book

Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? Carmen is a media franchise of educational computer games, TV programs, and BOOKS, and I found this Carmen over at What I Wore blog.  I will also note this blog is super great, and has many more super fun costume ideas for when you need to play dress up!

Cute cute book inspired costume idea again from Dad Apprentice

How To Train Your Dragon

The Book

This is one of my favorite young readers books.  I know this costume doesn't say that it's Hiccup but it totally could be. If Give A Mouse A Cookie

Book Mouse

I thought this costume was very original and would work great for child or adult. You could change up the undershirt to a grey t-shirt or turtle neck if you didn't want to go sleeveless. The cookie looks super simple to make, and you could just make a large one out of card board if you didn't have two dressing up. I found this story brought to life on website Instructables complete with instructions.

Tuesday Treasury

This week's Tuesday Treasury is inspired by a book by Shel Silverstein, and one of my childhood favorites at that, The Giving Tree. So in this week's treasury, in which I call "Once There Was A Tree....", I have included all kinds of tree inspired goodies from the impressive and talented vendors from Etsy. Now, I will leave you with a excerpt from the book and a link to the full treasury list.Click HERE for full list.

Once there was a tree..... and she loved a little boy. And every day the boy would come and he would gather her leaves and make them into crowns and play king of the forest. He would climb up her trunk and swing from her branches and eat apples. And they would play hide-and-go-seek. And when he was tired, he would sleep in her shade. And the boy loved the tree.......very much. And the tree was happy. -Shel Silverstein

What was one of your favorite childhood books?

Tuesday Treasury

So I have created a theme for Tuesday's here on Inside My Head. Tuesday Treasury will become a mainstay starting this week! That is, if my crazy busy life with three boys allows me to keep up. So, what is Tuesday Treasury? Tuesday Treasury is a list I have personally compiled from Etsy.com with a given theme of my choosing for the week. Knowing me, I will be drawing much of my inspiriation from my favorite fairytales, books, music, and life experiences. I hope you all will visit me every Tuesday to see what inspired me this week and check out all the talented artists, collectors, crafters, and various Etsy venders that are featured each week by following the links to the treasury. I also hope you will leave me a little note telling me what inspires you. You never know, you may be my next inspiration!

I hope you enjoy this Tuesday's first Treasury list inspired by one of my all time favorite stories by C.S. Lewis, The Lion the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and named Journey Through The Wardrobe.

Meet The Easton Brothers{Merlin's Kin}

I have recently had the great privilege of reading the first drafts of two books written by aspiring author M.G. Stover. M. Stover has been a friend of mine for as long as I can remember, and a loyal, trustworthy friend at that. So, to see him complete not only one, but two really great works of fiction (with a third installment in the works) has been truly exhilarating. I feel genuinely honored that he has allowed me to be part of the selected few to read the books in their early stages. Might I say, after reading them, I have only gained more proof of M. Stover's creative ability to make stories come to life. He has made me love characters, dislike characters, feel sorry for them and relate to them. He has even made me start out disliking them and somehow twisted that dislike into loving them without really changing the personality of the character. It’s a very unique ability that you will find only great authors possess. He has formed unlikely heroes out of the bonds of friendship and brotherhood. He has taken me on a journey filled with magic, wonder, love, struggles and the desire to live, all without overwhelming the reader.

The collection of books titled “Merlin's Kin Series” is a journey where you will meet the Easton brothers. A couple of brothers not unlike many others who fight, stick their nose in one another’s business, look out for each other and simply drive each other insane, just for a giggle. However, Jon & Renny Easton, upon further examination, aren’t your typical brothers. They are descendants of the legendary wizard Merlin, and while this leaves the eldest brother with great and powerful magical abilities, it leaves the youngest brother cursed with a transformation that is the responsibility of the older brother to eliminate. This genetic curse has burdened the Easton family tree for generations and Jon and Renny are no exception to the curse of Merlin’s kin.

That my friends is the back drop for these creatively and well written books. I have enjoyed every page and every character, and my hope is that someday very soon you will be able to pick up your own copies from the shelves of your favorite bookstore, and allow the story of Merlin’s Kin to come to life in your imagination!

Sigh...Yes I am a Twilight Geek!

In honor of the midnight release of New Moon, and to stay true to my motto embrace the geekness. So to stay absolutely true to the geek that I am I thought I would write a little about Twilight and even feature a New Moon inspired fashion set I made with the help of the website POLYVORE. A blog soon to come featuring that super awesome and fabulous website. okay back to New Moon. I am excited for the appearance of Aro and the whole wicked Volterra crew. Although New Moon is the one book in the series that I was tempted to put in a shredder or at the very least throw at a couple walls, and maybe out the window of a moving car. Okay so I am really just kidding kinda, but yes I am that passionate of a reader, yes those thoughts really crossed my mind embarrassingly so. Lets just say it's a darn good thing Alice is smart enough to grab Bella whisk her off to Italy to save Edward. Else the book would have never survived my geek wrath =)...Okay Okay so what if Alice gets visions of the future and has nothing to do with how smart she is. She is still totally my favorite!!! I will admit Bella is so not my favorite she is a tad to much of a whiner, and I have a feeling the melodramatics will come flying in this movie with the whole tug o war with Jacob and Edward. Silly girl she is!!! Yet I love Twilight, and the story the book series has illustrated. I am a sucker for a good love story, and yes it is a great love story. Bella and Edward are a typical oil and water love story couple only they get lucky and get a happy ending unlike poor Romeo and Juliet. As the movie releases tonight and the super fans are standing in line for tickets. I admit I am tad bit jealous because I can't wait for Alice to steal the bright yellow Porsche with her cute little style, and Jane to get uber pissed a take it out on Edward. Don't worry all you Twilight haters out there I don't think that it's going to take over the world or anything at least you hope not! =)

Below is a Fashion Set Inspired by Jane making her first appearance in the Twilight Series New Moon.

Esperanza

Every now and then I read a book that inspires me, and maybe even changes me a little, and this summer a story about a young Mexican girl did just that.
Esperanza Rising this book made me tear up several times. It is such an powerful story about struggles, family, new beginnings, sacrifices, and the strength that love and hope gives. When young Esperanza and her mother leave behind a privileged fairy tale life in Mexico. After tragedy strikes their family forcing them to start over in California as farm workers. It's a tale hope, and the strength people gain when love is shared and unbreakable family bonds are formed. Even in the hardship that this young child faced she never gave up on love, and even found love standing right in front of her. She is guided by her heart, and forced to grow into an adult much before her time. The book is also a remarkable example how the decisions we make can effect generations of our family tree in the branches that are yet to come. I didn't know until completed the book, when I paid attention to the authors name, that it was loosely written about the authors grandmother, it only made the story that much more touching!

This book is beautiful written and I am glad it was a random book I picked up my last adventure to the bookstore. I think I learned some lessons of my own in this book....I recommend this book to anyone!!

favorite quote from the book:
"We are like the phoenix," said Abuelita. "Rising again, with a new life ahead of us."

Aspiring Author

To kick off our series on people in the Neighbor I choose to pick the brain of long time friend and aspiring author M.G. Stover. For as long as I can remember this brilliant mind has been a creative force with a passion for the arts. We just recently reconnected, and once again find ourselves living in the same city. Which has been cause to jump for joy considering he is one of my most valued and loyal friends, and has quickly become my go to guy for suggestions on movies, books, and video games. M. Stover is one of the most intelligent and open minded people I know. Lets also not forget the twist of sarcasm that he has been perfecting for years. Also fair warning to everyone beware you could end up in one of his novels! In his free time he loves to see the world, fight for causes he believes in, and spend as much time as possible with his adorable niece and nephew. When he is not working to pay the bills he is working on typing(I say typing because even he can't read his own hand writing)out the stories that have come to life inside his head. I truly hope you enjoy this interview with this inspiring, creative, original, young author as much as I have enjoyed writing about him, and someday in the future I hope his stories come to life for all us on a Barnes and Noble bookshelf.

Q: Have you always wanted to be an Author?

A: In some ways I guess. It wasn’t something I dreamed about. In fact what I wanted to do has changed many many times over the years. I remember in the seventh grade wanting to be a psychiatrist, wanting to live in Seattle, and not being opposed to radio work. I quickly realized I just wanted to be Frasier Crane.

That being said though I’ve been creating stories in my mind ever since I was a child. I spent hours creating various story lines with my action figures (x-men at the time) and just loved that feeling. Once I got to old to admit to playing with toys I started doing the same thing but this time on a computer screen and with a keyboard.

Q: What inspires you to write?

A: The desire to get all these scenes I have in my head played out and to occupy some time in a world that is a hell of a lot more fun than the boring one we all live in. Also to escape my own life for a while and put on the skin of someone who doesn’t have my own inferiority issues that we all deal with on a day to day basis.

Q: What is the title of your most recent work, and whats the storyline?

A: Currently I’m working on a series of books about the Easton brothers. The title of the series is Merlin’s Kin although its never been a title I’ve loved and is very likely to change. For me titles are way down the list in things I worry about when it comes to writing. The storyline is about two brothers Jon and Renny who’s lineage can be traced back to Merlin. Legend states that Merlin was born of a Fairy princesses and a demon prince. As a result of this mixed lineage there is a genetic curse of sorts that haunts the Easton family. The family will always produce sons, the first son will be gifted with great magic ability the second will be born a half demon and sometime in their mid-twenties go full demon. As a demon Renny will have no control over himself and injury if not murder anyone he comes into contact with. Jon has grown up seeking a cure for his brother but has come up empty and the changes in Renny become more an more obvious as the books go along.

Q: Did you favorite author, write your favorite book?

A: That’s an interesting question. Probably not when I think about it. My favorite author is Tolkien because he was the founding father of modern fantasy and while I love his books I wouldn’t say they are my favorite. I’m very hesitant to name a favorite book though because it changes with the tides and I’m such an addictive personality that whatever I’m reading is my favorite in that moment.

Q: If you had a book club what would it be reading?

A: Anything Urban Fantasy. I love the idea of this mythical creatures living in our world the way it is today and the way that our world would adapt to meet them. It’s a great time to be an author in this genre as Twilight and True Blood have just exploded and really opened the genre up to more than just D&D geeks.

Q: What authors have influenced your own work?

A: Several. Jim Butcher who writes the Dresden Files, Kim Harrison who writes the Rachel Morgan series, and Laurel K. Hamilton before she became a wanna-be erotic fiction writer in her Anita Blake series.

Q: How important is it to you to get published and will you ever give up on the dream?

A: I’ll never give up on the dream and it is only as important as my need for validation is that day so going on most days more important than anyone will ever know.

Q: What your 5 favorite books-and why?

A: (this is in no certain order) Obsidan Butterfly-Laurel Hamilton, this was the first book of the Anita Blake series I read and funny enough the last good one in the series (it was the 9th of the series). Storm Front by Jim Butcher because he does such a good job of making every supernatural thing in his world feel as if it should have been there, Interview with a Vampire by Anne Rice she really kick started the vampire craze that the world is in right now and this one came out before she became so detail oriented that she’d spend an entire chapter on how a cameo looked. The Lord of the Rings- I really feel the whole thing has to be taken as one book but if I had to choose just one it would be the Two Towers. The sense of dread is so creeping in that book that even if you know how it ends you just don’t see how it’s possible. Finally, anything that collects the entire works of Shakespeare. I know its not really a book but it is written word and really everyone in this game is in some way or another just cribbing off the Bard.

Also not listed in anything above would have to be my unabashed love of comic books. It is only the fact that I couldn’t restrain my spending on them that I don’t still buy them today but I do keep up with what’s happening through various websites and every other week I ponder stopping by the comic book shop and buying up a bunch.

Q: Do you let anyone read your unfinished work?

A: If they are prepared to ignore misspellings, grammar errors, and lie to me and tell me how wonderful it is. That’s only partially a joke but it is incredibly stomach churning to even think about someone reading my stuff who I know. Now I can send it off to a million agents and they can reject it and that’s fine but when it is someone I know and they are only barely interested its soul crushing.

Q: Are you a fiction, or non-fiction kinda guy?

A: Fiction without a doubt and it has to be fun fiction. I can no longer read depressing works and I know that its probably rotting my brain and putting to shame my English degree but I just want to tune turn on and drop out when I’m reading anymore. Frankly with movies, TV, and Video Games a book has to do a lot more work to keep my interest anymore, so at the very least I know what I’m working against in my own books.
